English is considered as a foreign language in Indonesia. Because of thiscondition, not many people use English in their daily life as their languagefor communication. In modern era, English is the common language used incommunication. In Indonesia, English as a foreign has become a compulsorysubject for all schools. The students at the school are expected to be able tocommunicate using English. Based on the previous study conducted by theresearcher at SMP Al Madina Wonosobo, there are many students havedifficulties in learning English, especially in pronunciation, vocabulary andconfidence. This is shown by the students’ achievement who are still underof the standard minimal score. The objective of this research is to know theuse of English short story to enrich students’ vocabulary mastery. Accordingto (Jeanne,2007), vocabulary is largely about remembering, and studentsgenerally need to see, say, and write newly learned words many times beforethey can be said to have learned them. The subject of this research arestudents of VIII-Grade at SMP Al Madina Wonosobo which consist of 35students in the academic year 2022/2023. The instrument of collecting dataare qualitative data from observation, interview, diary notes anddocumentation. The quantitative data are taken from test, which is carried outin the end of every cycle. The test is given to the students in the form of pretest,post-testIinthefirstcycleandpost-testIIinthesecondcycle.BasedontheresultofthedataanalysisshowsthatthescoreofstudentsincreasefromthecycleIuntilcycleII.Itisshowedfromthemeanofthepre-testis52.74,thereis11.42%(4students)whogetsuccessfulscorecriteria75above.Inthepost-testofcycleI,themeanofthepost-testofcycleIis69.37,itishigherthanthe pre-test. There is 22.85% (8 students) who get successful scorecriteria 75 above. The percentage of the students’ score from the pre-test tothe post-test of cycle I is 11.43%. In the post-test of cycle II, the mean of thepost-test of cycle II is 75.97 and the percentage is 57.14% (20 students) whoget successful score criteria 75 above. The improvement of the students’score from the post-test of cycle I to the post-test of cycle II is improvement34.29%. It shows that the use English short story is effective as it is able toimprove students’ vocabulary mastery. Therefore, the hypothesis presents “The use of English short story to enrichstudents’ vocabulary mastery at “SMP Al Madina Wonosobo” is accepted.
